Brass Mechanical Counter: £5
Ted was unsure about this. It was a lovely brass mechanical counter made by Counting Instruments Ltd, an English Company – but it didn’t work!
Ted approached the lady in the shop and, putting on his disappointed and sad look, and appearing horrified at the £10 price tag, asked what the price was given its sorry state.
“Hmmm…,” she said as she tried to make something – anything – move, “£5.”
Ted considered. Was it repairable, or was it beyond hope?
He handed over the money, and on leaving the shop immediately regretted it.
It turned out that a number of teeth inside had sheared off – or simply worn away – and it was beyond hope. How sad! But wait… didn’t Ted have another counter of that make which he bought years ago? Yes – but it counted rotations, not single clicks! And it wasn’t as nice as this one would be if it was working!
He dismantled both counters, and within an hour he ended up with this beautiful brass one!
